Retail Buyers Guide: Wetsuits SS17 Trend Report
INTERVIEWEE: CARLO RAUEN (PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT NEOPRENE)
Firstly, can you tell us about how your spring/summer wetsuits line is evolving compared to your traditional fall/winter one ? (percentage)
– 66%(summer) vs. 34%(winter)
Regarding neoprene material, tell us about the characteristics and specific objectives of a summer wetsuit.
The specific objective for ION was to use the fact that the end consumer is usually not very sensitive in terms of warmth for the summer suits to make them lighter and stretchier, especially by saving lining.
How do you make sure it’s strong enough to last?
We use high quality materials, inside seam tapings and extra inside tapings at stress points.
Design-wise, how is the panel construction designed for comfort? How are you working to make your seams are resistant and stretchy?
For the 2017 Collection we avoid seams where you need the most elongation. One example is the so-called Sweep_Cut at the Select level suits or the new Panel Layout oft he new Onyx Amp zipless.
What’s the role of the lining in your wetsuits? What are its most important features during the summer?
As the warmth is not that important for the summer suits, we always pick lining with nice hand feel and we have all our linings Sanitised treated to combat bacterial growth and thereby smell, which is important especially in summer.
And even if it looks a bit boring we keep the inside lining black- lighter colours tend to delaminate quicker especially in the sun.
In terms of style, which colours and patterns are the most popular for SS17?
MEN Pigeon at the Nozips & Dark Blue/Red Wine combination
WOMEN Hazelnut with Vermillion details
In terms of price, which demographics/levels do you address here?
We have different price levels to address all customer levels.
Tell us a bit more about the unique benefits and high-end details of your wetsuits.
Ninja Knee: What’s the most common thing a customer does in the shop? They pull at the wetsuit’s arms. But hey, the legs deserve the same attention! Therefore the new Ninja_Knees feature uses the same high elastic material used in the arm panels. The result is amazing freedom of movement while bending your knees.
Ninja Spine: Same concept as for the Ninja_Knees. A small strip is inserted between the back and the buttock panel giving your upper body freedom to rotate and more stretch for paddling.
Sweep Cut: Seam-free shoulder construction, as introduced and proven in 2016 with the Onyx Select.
