What’s the overall theme behind your 2017/18 outerwear?
From day one, Dakine has always been a rider-driven brand that believes in the importance of building products to withstand the use and abuse of our team who depend on our gear every day. The theme builds up on adventures of team riders and how to fulfil their needs. To them, it all boils down to finding the best conditions on a global scale. When you’re chasing storms you need gear you can rely on. DAKINE provides that gear.

From where do you take your inspiration? What other brands, designers, artists or collectives do you follow who influence the style of your brand?
We look at trends and there are certainly brands we respect but we take our own approach. Dakine has always practiced innovation through location. Our backyard, Mt Hood, draws people from all over the US and even globally during the summer and we like to look at what people are wearing. These people are proper trendsetters.

We have a very talented group of people in product development and graphic design that join forces and come up with great things. In the men’s line, we are introducing a few new styles that were built in collaboration with team rider Louif Paradis and men’s designer, Peter Line.

What are the two most important products in your 2017/18 range? Why? Please tell us about them.
We would highlight the pieces worn by our team riders Louif Paradis and Elias Elhardt.

We worked with Louif to design a set of jacket and pants that would withstand the fabric-destroying nature of filming in the streets and have the versatility and function to chase the snow wherever it flies. The result was the Huntsman Jacket and the Meridian Pant.

What new fits / silhouettes are coming next year?
We offer both a standard fit (relaxed) and tailored fit (trimmed) to satisfy different functionality and style preferences.  We are still seeing a strong demand for slightly longer jackets as they provide added warmth on the chairlift, as well as appeal to a more versatile aesthetic. Bibs are still a major trend and Dakine offers premium 3L Gore-Tex® as well as 15k/15k 2L bibs.

What’s new in colours / prints?
We see most of our fabrics trending towards more plain weaves while keeping things fresh with some street wear influenced textures such as our new 2L poly waxed ottoman that features a distressed look that will continue to wear-in with use.

Staying true to our Northwest roots, the Dakine colour palette focuses on slightly darker, saturated colours.  You’ll see us mixing fall browns and deep blue greens as well as kicking things up with a few colour blocked tonal brights that are paired with next generation neutrals.

Overall, we are taking a classic approach to prints and creating more timeless, nature inspired illustrations that pull from our Northwest roots yet offer relevant design for a global market.

We offer a focused approach to exterior and interior print. According to men’s designer, Peter Line, “we are seeing a lot of mixing and matching of prints and colour to customize one’s personal style, riding style and environment”.  On the new Field Camo print, “I started with a basic camo pattern and then added some texture and stretched it out to give it a mix of a camo and stripe look”.  For our men’s interior print, Dakine commissioned Austin born artist, Denton Watts. Watts’ blend of digital illustration with hand-cut printmaking creates bold, striking works in a style that reflects American folk art and tattooing.
