Press Release: “If you’ve got a glint in your eye and the wood and wheels, then you’re in”.
My guest for episode 010 was skateboarder, artist, designer, musician, thinker and doer Peter Hellicar. Pete came to prominence as a pro skater in the late 80s and early 90s, and has since gone on to have a ridiculously long and varied career.
He helped set up legendary British skate brand Unabomber, worked as Art Director at Sole Tech, and today works as an established and highly admired artist.
Our conversation covers art, music, life, skateboarding, creativity, the generosity of skateboarding, and plenty more, including:
- The story behind setting up Unabomber and the idea behind the iconic wings logo.
- The experience of heading to the States to work for Sole Tech.
- How skating’s intensely creative culture has fed into everything Pete has pursued in his career.
- The philosophy and openness that underpins Pete’s current artistic career.
There’s something for everyone here: Pete’s unique perspective on UK skate history, his approach to art and creativity, brilliant insights into how he’s carved out such a unique career for himself and generally a proper entertaining chat with a charismatic individual mulling over his life and times.
