Sustainable surf is a non-profit charity organisation based in the surf capital of the world, California. Entrepreneurs Michael Stewart and Kevin Whilden founded the charity with one aim; to be the catalyst that transforms surf culture into a powerful force for protecting the ocean playground. A growing initiative of the Sustainable surf is the Ecoboard project. A program that helps the surf community build high-performance yet sustainable boards. The newest members to join the illustrious project is the line of Matta SMARTech surfboards.

For some time Matta has had its focus clearly set on producing sustainable and environmentally friendly surfboards. Whether it be their rigorous recycling scheme, that sees them collecting waste EPS foam to pack new surfboard blanks or their upcycle program, Matta has maintained their clear focus. As a member of sustainable surf, Matta also strives to educate and engage individuals about the environmental impacts of lifestyle through the lens of their surfboards.

Matta’s SMARTech surfboards consist of high-density EPS with a carbon stringer, which helps maintain strength and rigidity. With three different fibreglass reinforcements going in six directions and its unique layers of materials, the board is responsive whilst maintaining pop. Sustainable surf labels each board with its seal of approval, which guarantees the board has been constructed in an approved sustainable method.
