NSP SURFBOARDS 2025 PREVIEW
Retail Buyers Guide: Surfboards 2025 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand: NSP
Interviewee: Jarrason Bitton - Design & Communications Manager
If you were to draw a quick assessment of 2024, how would you describe the current state of the surfboard market?
2024 was better than expected for the markets that made a big push to get samples to stores that while full of older inventory, welcomed something fresh, new and different. So there were some positive rays of sunshine that the markets are improving, or at a minimum open minded to new boards, new shapes, and fresh new graphics. Our premium category of Shapers Union boards made a positive impact supported by new shapes, the new graphic and logo changes promoting the shaper built in NSP’s
We see a resurgence of a trend consisting of (literally) no-name brands, with boards retailing at very aggressive prices (under 300 €). Are you concerned by this recurring phenomenon?
We have seen these no name brands come and go, and history shows their business model is not sustainable. While they may attract buyers with low prices, customers quickly realize that durability and performance matter in the long run. The real concern is when premium brands enter this low cost space, which can lead to a race to the bottom.
The good news in the surfboard market is that sales are quite evenly spread between very different designs (perf shortboards, summer boards, midlengths, longboards, beginner funboards), unlike other activities which rely on a single design. Have you adapt your range to offer a mixed bag of boards or do you rather specialize in one segment?
We are strongest in the mid-tier surf category while also offering premium hero products that showcase the best of our design and construction. Rather than chasing the lowest price points, where durability and performance are often compromised! At NSP we focus on delivering functional boards that surfers can trust built to last.
In the past, beginners had go through the walk of shame, forced to aim for “fugly” looking shapes. In 2025, a novice board can be sexy as well: what do you have in stock for the newbies?
Nobody wants to stick out like a channel marker in the lineup, so we design our entry level boards to help first time surfers blend in while getting the best possible start. Whether it is our softboards or durable hardboards, our focus is on stability, easy paddling and wave catching ability, all without sacrificing style. Learning to surf should be fun, and having a board that looks as good as it performs makes the process even better. We have always believed that beginner boards should look as good as they perform. Our range spans from softboards to durable hardboards, all designed to help new surfers progress with confidence. Instead of chasing the lowest price, we focus on shaping boards that offer stability, easy paddling, and wave-catching ability without looking like an afterthought. Whether it is a first surfboard or a go-to for fun days, NSP make learning feel good on and off the water.
The so-called Grovelers dominate the shortboard category (even if used in overhead surf), yet options are very unalike, from twin-keels to stubby tri-fins. What is your take within the Groveler category?
This is something we have been refining for years. At NSP, we see grovelers as more than just small wave boards. They are high performance tools for surfers who want to maximize their wave count without sacrificing speed or maneuverability. Our approach is about creating FUNctional shapes that work in real world conditions, whether it is gutless mush or punchy peaks. By fine tuning volume distribution, rocker lines, and rail profiles, we build grovelers that paddle fast, generate instant speed, and stay responsive underfoot. From fast twins to versatile thrusters and quads, we make sure there is an option for every surfer looking to make the most of less than perfect waves.
Midlengths are everywhere as well. What are the latest developments in this design within your range?
Midlengths remain a key part of our range, offering a versatile step up from a shortboard to catch more waves while maintaining manoeuvrability and control. The Speedline by Laguna Bay, shaped by Tully St John, and the Cheetah CSE by Carl Schaper continue to be popular models, combining smooth transitions, excellent hold, and dynamic turning ability. Together, they showcase the best of midlength design, balancing paddle power, flow, and responsiveness to handle a variety of conditions without compromising performance. Their versatility makes them ideal for surfers stepping down from longer boards or performance riders looking to bridge the gap and boost their wave count.
The longboard reach is unprecedented in surfing history, as even die-hard shortboard brands offer classic Logs. How have you positioned yourself? If you have been a long-time promoter of 9’+ boards, do you think “the more the merrier”?
Longboards have been a major part of NSP for years, and we continue to refine them and collaborate with world class shaping legends like Carl Schaper and Tully St. John with their world title winning experience shaping boards for the worlds best! The stock Sleep Walker 9’2” even made it into numerous WSL events, proving its performance at the highest level. Whether it is classic noseriders or modern performance shapes, we are committed to offering high-quality longboards that surfers actually want to ride. As the longboard segment continues to grow globally, we see more surfers embracing its timeless style and versatility, making it an essential part of any quiver.
The Groveler infused the High-performance Shortboard, yet the extra foam has been streamlined so that High-perf shapes still bear a racey look. Please unveil your secrets!
It’s all about finding that finely tuned balance, giving surfers a board that paddles easier, catch waves earlier, and turns like a performance shortboard. When is that ever a bad thing? Grovellers make for the perfect everyday rider for most abilities, not just for weekend warriors who need a little extra help, but also for the easy-rider and performance crossover market, surfers who want performance without having to be the GOAT. Once you get hooked on a groveller there is no looking back
While the alternative constructions/materials towards the eco-friendly surfboard have never been so plentiful, we are far from a massive adoption (whether from manufacturers or end-users). Any solutions out there that seem viable to you?
We are always at the forefront of finding ways to reduce our environmental impact while maintaining high performing products with great value built to last. Our molded constructions, like HDT, minimise material wastage and ensure consistency, while our SecureCell foam cores prevent water absorption and extend board lifespan. By refining these processes, we create durable, high-performing boards that offer a more sustainable option without compromising quality or performance.
