From a niche market to a popular must-have, Changing Robes and Surf Ponchos keep on growing. What is your strategy for 2025: keep on expanding full tilt or has the time came to consolidate your offer?
As with every market, standing still can be the end of a strong brand. We have continued to make small improvements and developments within our range to continually offer the best possible product for the best possible price.
The Robe/Poncho appeal is so mainstream nowadays: have you considered reaching out beyond the boardsport distribution channels before the fashion big names take over the demand?
I’m not sure trying to “battle” the quick fashion stores is the way to go. People like NewLook and Primark have brought out long jackets without any of the technology that the watersports brands offer. For me, they are targeting a very different customer and were not in the space of make a lower quality product to make a quick buck.
Recently, lighter and quicker drying options using micro-fiber cloth, rather than the thick terry Surf Poncho, have gained traction,. Do you offer both?
No, we have micro-fibre sections to our robes, but not as the main internal.
The (Changing) Robes are worn in very different situations: Après-surf, dog walking, camping, as an indoor plaid and as a fashion statement in the big cities! Do you offer specific models for those various activities or the all-in-one product is the go-to choice?
No, our robes are designed with their main purpose in mind, which is drying and warmth. The fact that the robes are being used in other places outdoors, is great, but our robe options remain the same. In order to cater more for the other outdoor activities we have, in 2024, introduced a VAST Hoody. We manufacture using the same units but the shorter hoody options provides more flexibility and comfort in its use as a an everyday jacket.
Style: As there is pretty much a single silhouette for Ponchos & Robes, the only way to stand out is via colors/prints/patterns. What do you have in store for 2025?
Disagree about single silhouette, brands need to be creative as we were being the first brand to introduce the Hoody option. But for colours, we are introducing a new Mulberry purple option and a dark teal.
How are you helping retailers to sell more of your product?
Retailer relationships are central to every decision we make. We include our retailer base in all product decisions and value their feedback in to our product development processes. Retailers are on the front lines in sales and the feedback from their consumers allows the brand to develop in the right way
