Hyda Water Helmets 2026 Preview

Retail Buyers Guide:  Water Helmets 2026 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand:  Hyda
Interviewee: Greg Keeling - VP Market Development

How was the water helmets business in 2025?
2025 was a landmark year for HYDA. We completed a full rebrand from SIMBA Surf Helmets, our original brand founded in 2016, to HYDA Helmets, and launched two brand-new products: the Coanda Fusion and the Coanda Core. Both helmets represent a complete ground-up engineering effort and a significant step forward from what we had built with SIMBA. HYDA gives us a broader platform to speak to the full spectrum of water sports, while staying rooted in what we know best. Response from the surf community has been strong, and we are seeing real traction in wave parks and surf schools, which have become an increasingly important sales channel globally. The biggest signal of the year: in early 2026, Kai Lenny joined HYDA not just as an athlete, but as part of our ownership group. Kai is one of the most versatile and respected watermen on the planet, competing at the highest levels across big-wave surfing, foiling, paddleboarding, and kiteboarding. His focus on progression – constantly pushing boundaries in the water regardless of discipline is the embodiment of what HYDA stands for as a brand. His involvement goes well beyond a typical endorsement deal and speaks to where HYDA is headed in the future.

Which are the leading watersports as far as helmet use? Any movement within the distinct disciplines?
Surfing continues to lead adoption growth, driven by two converging forces: the professionalization of big-wave riding, and the rapid global expansion of wave parks. Both environments are accelerating helmet normalization in a way that was not happening five years ago. On the WSL Championship Tour, more than half of women competitors and around 20% of men are now choosing to wear helmets at heavy venues. That shift in professional visibility has a downstream effect on recreational surfers and groms who look to the tour for cultural cues. Wave parks are perhaps the most significant structural driver. Operators are keenly aware that helmets are both a safety necessity (hard pool bottoms, concentrated crowds, unpredictable learners) and an important element of risk mitigation. HYDA has an active partnership with URBNSURF across their Melbourne and Sydney locations, as does Atlantic Park Surf in Virginia Beach where Coanda Core is now part of each of their standard guest equipment offerings. Foilers are leading the way in adoption beyond surfing. Wing foiling and kite foiling involve high speeds and the very real possibility of impact with your own equipment, which makes helmet use a straightforward decision for most participants. Kai Lenny’s involvement with HYDA across multiple disciplines reinforces this connection between surf and foiling communities.

Do you have any data regarding user demographics, and especially their age groups?
The most notable demographic trend is the accelerating adoption among younger surfers, groms and junior competitors in particular. When helmets become part of the visual culture at elite venues like Pipeline, Teahupo’o, and Nazare, it filters down quickly. A 14-year-old surfer watching Kai Lenny wear a helmet in the heaviest conditions sees it differently than they would if it were positioned purely as safety equipment. We are also seeing strong uptake among adult learners in wave parks, typically 25 to 45, both male and female, for whom the protective rationale is an easy sell. This crew is less resistant to helmets culturally and responds well to the combination of comfort, performance design, and safety reassurance.

Are you favoring multi-purpose helmet designs or models intended for a single sport?
HYDA is 100% focused on the needs of water athletes. Our design philosophy starts in the ocean and works outward. The Coanda platform, with its hydrodynamic shell geometry and water-specific engineering, translates naturally to adjacent disciplines like wing foiling, wake, and whitewater, but protection in surf environments is where every product decision begins. The Coanda Fusion and Coanda Core are purpose-built for surf, yet still carry EN 1385 certification, which covers a broad range of water sports. The Simba Sentinel S1, our legacy product carried forward from the SIMBA era, features a three-quarter face guard design that appeals to surfers who want maximum facial coverage.

Please take us through your water helmet range.
Coanda Fusion | $199.95 Our flagship. The Coanda Fusion is built around the Coanda Effect, a hydrodynamic design principle that guides water flow smoothly around the helmet shell, reducing drag during duck dives, wipeouts, and hold-downs. All interior padding and materials are closed-cell and do not absorb water. The padding geometry is designed to minimize open space inside the helmet when worn, so water has nowhere to collect. The result is a helmet that stays light and low-drag from the first wave to the last. ERT (Energy Reduction Technology) pads absorb both rotational and linear impact energy. The Instafit dial-in retention system allows precise, on-the-fly fit adjustment, and the Fidlock magnetic chinstrap locks securely with one hand and stays put in the heaviest conditions. EN 1385 certified. Available in three colorways (Lumen, Ether, Stealth), two sizes (S/M, L/XL). Retail: $199.95.
Coanda Core | $149.95 The same Coanda Effect shell design as the Fusion, engineered for accessibility. The Core carries the same hydrodynamic geometry, closed-cell interior materials, and EN 1385 certification, with a streamlined fit system dialed for comfort. Strong entry point for beginners, surf school programs, and wave park rental fleets. Available in three colorways (Moon Grey, Stealth, Cobalt), four sizes (S/M/L/XL). Retail: $149.95.
Simba Sentinel S1 | $99.95 Our founder’s original design and the first modern surf helmet. The S1 pioneered a three-quarter face guard configuration, offering full head, ear, and jawline protection in a 372-gram shell. Built with a hydrodynamic low-profile design and removable HaloFit pads for a custom fit. A strong option for surfers who want the most comprehensive facial coverage available. Available in Matte Black and White, two sizes (M/L). Retail: $99.95.

What are the specific tech requirements for water helmets compared to other action sports helmets?
Water helmets operate in a fundamentally different environment than helmets designed for snow, skate, or cycling, and the engineering requirements reflect that. Hydrodynamics and drag:
A helmet that creates drag in the water does not just feel uncomfortable; it actively impairs performance. Duck diving with a poorly shaped helmet adds drag and builds fatigue on every paddle out. HYDA’s Coanda Effect shell geometry manages water flow around the helmet, reducing resistance during submersion and allowing clean, natural movement.
Water management:
HYDA’s approach to water management starts with the interior. All padding and materials are closed-cell and do not absorb water. The padding geometry is designed to minimize open space inside the helmet when worn, so water has nowhere to collect during submersion. The result is a helmet that performs consistently throughout a session, stays light on your head, and does not create turbulence or added drag when you duck dive or get held down.
Retention in dynamic conditions:
The forces involved in a heavy wipeout, including turbulent water, rolling, and extended hold-downs, are different from impact in a snow or skate fall. A helmet needs to stay in place through all of it. The Fidlock magnetic chinstrap system on the Fusion and the secure retention geometry across all three HYDA models are engineered specifically for these conditions.
Ear protection:
Ear coverage in water helmets serves multiple purposes. Long-term, repeated cold water and wind exposure causes exostosis, commonly known as surfer’s ear, a progressive and painful condition requiring surgery if left untreated. At high speeds, a wipeout in kite or wing foiling can create enough impact force to rupture eardrums or cause lasting hearing damage. HYDA’s ear vents are acoustically tuned to allow sound through so surfers can hear their environment, maintain spatial awareness, and communicate, while still providing meaningful protection against both impact and long-term exposure.
Material durability in saltwater:
Hardware, straps, and structural adhesives all need to hold up to repeated saltwater immersion, UV exposure, and the mechanical stress of wipeouts. This dictates material choices throughout, from non-corrosive hardware on the S1 to solvent-free adhesives across the Coanda line.
