Karakoram Splitboarding F/W 2026/27 Preview
Retail Buyers Guide: Splitboarding F/W 2026/27 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand: Karakoram
Interviewee: Kyle HansenKahn, Director of Marketing & Business Development
How would you describe the 2024/25 splitboard season in terms of market performance and consumer demand?
While growth rates and consumer spending moderated from pandemic highs, participation remained strong. We’re seeing increased sophistication among buyers—riders understand the differences between entry-level and performance systems. Weather variability created uneven conditions across regions, but committed splitboarders remained active. The market is maturing with repeat customers upgrading equipment rather than first-time buyers dominating sales.
What major trends are shaping the splitboard market (pricing, consumer preferences, backcountry participation)?
There’s strong demand for weight reduction without sacrificing durability, pushing materials innovation. Backcountry participation has broadened to include more and more riders venturing past resorts seeking powder access, creating demand for approachable yet capable systems. Environmental consciousness remains important, with riders valueing durable equipment and responsible manufacturing. Multi-day touring and hut trips are increasing, emphasizing system reliability.
From changing consumer behavior to tariffs and supply chain stress, what’s been the biggest challenge for your brand recently?
Supply chain predictability remains challenging, particularly for specialized components. As a small American manufacturer, we’ve weathered tariff impacts better than import-dependent brands, but raw material costs have increased as have labor costs. Top of my mind now for biggest challenges of the year was managing ship dates and production timelines with all the tariff uncertainty. Our team really crushed it this year and we were able to get our biggest shipments out before the tariffs would have kicked in, but it really felt like the tariffs and geopolitics made the year a lot harder than it needed to be.
How are you supporting retailers in selling this category?
We’re doubling down on our efforts to connect with and train retail staff, hositing more in person clinics as well as continueing virtual clinics in areas we can’tpersonally visit. Backcountry travel remains technical so it’s one of the areas that in person sales can have a big impact on despite the industry shift to more and more online sales. We value that connection in person offers and want to do everything we can to support it.
SPLITBOARD BINDINGS SPECIFIC
What new innovations are you introducing in splitboard bindings (buckles, straps, highbacks, baseplates, heel cups, etc.)?
Our Carbon-Ti Ride Mode 3.0 interface represents our lightest, most efficient splitboard connection available, featuring reduced base area and glass or carbon-infused nylon construction that sheds snow naturally. The X3 Riser is engineered to last longer, and offers three climbing heights including a new low angle level for varied terrain. Our C4 Carbon Nyolite highback reduces weight while increasing stiffness compared to previous generations. The AirPod Independent Pressure Pod strap system articulates to boot shape, eliminating pressure points on long approaches. Our carbon fiber buckles use recycled carbon tow diverted from landfills, achieving strength without weight penalty.
Are you using new materials in bindings for 26/27? If so, what and why?
We’re advancing our Carbon Nyolite composite—a proprietary carbon-fiber reinforced material offering exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratios in highbacks. Our Ride Mode 3.0 utilizes advanced glass and carbon-infused nylon engineered specifically for snow shedding and durability in extreme conditions. Space-grade 7000-series aluminum remains our chassis material of choice—CNC-machining allows us to remove material in non-critical areas while maintaining strength where needed, achieving weight reduction impossible with casting or forging. The recycled carbon fiber tow in our buckles represents both performance and environmental advancement. We’re exploring next-generation composites for future weight reduction while maintaining our non-negotiable durability standards. Every material choice serves touring efficiency—backcountry performance demands the best materials engineering can provide.
