Spark R&D Splitboarding F/W 2026/27 Preview

Retail Buyers Guide:  Splitboarding F/W 2026/27 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand:  Spark R&D
Interviewee: Billy Madej – Marketing and Team Manager

How would you describe the 2024/25 snowboard binding season in terms of market performance and consumer demand?
The 24/25 season was a great season to get back on track after the boom-and-bust inventory cycle of the last few years.  We saw a modest but legitimate rise in market demand for splitboard bindings worldwide. Turns out, backcountry snowboarding is still fun, not just trendy.

What current trends are shaping the snowboard binding market (pricing, consumer preferences, retail shifts, rider demographics)?
In the splitboard binding world, there’s a clear trend towards lightweight, high-performance materials, with a secondary emphasis on sustainability and locally sourced production. Today’s consumers are prioritizing ease of use, ergonomic designs and backcountry reliability – features that are setting brands apart in this small market segment. We’re also seeing a rise in female participation driven by the visibility of women-only splitboard films. We love to see this and are helping to support it by funding women-led projects and collecting product feedback specific for this segment of riders.

From changing consumer behavior to tariffs and supply chain stress, what’s been the biggest challenge for your brand recently?
Along with everyone else, the biggest challenge we face is uncertainty – of everything from tariffs to snowfall to shipping logistics. We plan the best we can, but ultimately, it’s out of our control. We stay nimble, keep a good attitude (and a good sense of humor), and we continue on. What else can you do?

BRAND FOCUS

What is your brand’s core mission or philosophy, and how does it influence the way you design and position your bindings?
For splitboarders by splitboarders! Everything we design and build has a purpose and function to improve the splitboarding experience so our customers can focus on the fun. Our products are self-explanatory, reliable, and have easy transitions from tour to ride mode. The goal is to produce high-performance splitboard bindings that are accessible to the average rider and seasoned pro alike. And we know they work well, because we make them and use them ourselves. Our products are not just assembled at our factory – they are fully manufactured from start to finish in-house here in Bozeman, MT USA.

How has your brand evolved in the snowboard binding market over the past few years?
The 26/27 season marks our 20th anniversary! When we first started making splitboard-specific bindings, there were only a few brands making splitboards. At early tradeshows, people would stop by the booth looking very confused. We had to explain what a splitboard is, how it works, and why you would even do it. I’d say we’ve come a long way as a community! Over the last few years our Smooth Touring (ST) Tech and T1 system have set a standard for fast and pin-less transitions. Owning our own manufacturing equipment gives us the opportunity to innovate, test, and work towards a well thought out product. We are excited about what the future holds and are excited to push the boundaries of the best splitboard bindings of the future.

Who is your target rider for the 26/27 season, and how has that profile changed in recent seasons?
Our target rider has always been the same – someone who wants to put in the work to get out in the backcountry. Young, old, new, experienced. It’s all the same to us. If you value performance and reliability and products built by actual splitboarders, then we’re your people.

Which product ranges or binding styles do you anticipate driving the most growth in 26/27?
We expect a steady flux of newcomers into the sport, and they will always be our base. But in 26/27 we anticipate growth being driven by the hardbooters and the seasoned splitboarders. The hardboot split community has been all over our new Spark x ATK Tech Toe collab. The unmatched reliability alongside the weight savings and smooth entry has been a game changer for this crowd. The seasoned splitboarders will be wanting to get their hands on our new Nick Russell Pro binding. We explain the details of that below.

BINDING SPECIFIC

What new technical innovations are you introducing for 26/27 (buckles, straps, highbacks, baseplates, heel cups, etc.)?
As mentioned above, we’re introducing the new NR Pro Binding – designed with input from Nick Russell, arguably one of the most legit and dedicated splitboarders in the world. His pro binding features a Surge baseplate with Arc straps and a stiff carbon reinforced nylon highback. A new heel loop has been engineered to allow the highback to cant for even more response. The NR Pro Binding comes with snow camo padding on both the baseplate and highback for more comfort and grip. This is the most high-end feature-rich binding we’ve ever made, and the seasoned splitboarders are going to love it.

Are you exploring new materials, construction techniques, or performance features in your bindings?
We are constantly exploring new materials, manufacturing techniques, and performance features. The R&D is built into our name and our tagline – Dedicated to pushing innovation in splitboarding since 2006.

Do you have any new design directions, collaborations, or special editions for the 26/27 line?
To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’re introducing some new graphics that incorporate all the past iterations of the Arc and Surge. We’re also reflecting on all the colour combos over the years and bringing back our favourites!

Are you developing or expanding quick-entry / step-in binding systems, and how do you see demand for them evolving?
We leave the step-in program in the very capable hands of our Burton partners. They utilize our ST and T1 tech on their step-in splitboard bindings, and we support where needed.

What steps are you taking toward sustainability and ethical production in bindings — whether in materials, processes, or lifecycle?
We take pride in manufacturing our bindings and accessories in-house from start to finish. This allows us to have complete control over the process – from raw material purchasing to machine run times to recycling scraps. We are dedicated to finding ways to cut back on energy and water use throughout our operations and have made some significant progress over the years. Our on-site solar panels offset ~25% of our energy use and we purchase carbon credits to support local sustainable ranching efforts for anything else we cannot solve by improving operations.

Are you focusing on specific customer segments (freeride, freestyle, women’s-specific, youth, entry-level) for 26/27?
Our focus for customer segments parallels our philosophy of splitboarding, from entry-level to pros we want to see everyone on a split. Splitboarding does not discriminate and is for EVERYONE!
