Wayne Rich Surfboards 2026 Preview
Retail Buyers Guide: Surfboards 2026 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand: Wayne Rich
Interviewee: Marketing Team
Does the 25% participation growth translate in sales?
Wayne Rich rewards patience. As the wave of new surfers develops taste and starts seeking out boards with genuine shaping heritage — not just a recognizable logo — Rich’s reputation becomes an increasingly powerful asset. This is a brand for the market as it matures, not just as it grows. That investment is paying off now.
Stock vs. custom vs. D2C vs. brick and mortar?
Wayne Rich is a brick and mortar story at its core — the craftsmanship narrative requires a knowledgeable person to tell it, and that conversation happens on the shop floor. Stock programs provide the foundation; custom orders serve the devoted followers who understand and appreciate the nuance of Rich’s shaping philosophy. D2C is minimal by design.
How to lure newcomers away from softboards?
The pitch here is aspiration, not just function. These are boards shaped by a craftsman with decades of accumulated knowledge, boards that will grow with a surfer as they develop. Retailers who lead with that trajectory — rather than specs and dimensions — will convert crossover customers who are ready for something that means something.
Most sought after designs in 2026?
Longboards that blend turning performance with classic trim and nose-riding ability are leading demand. Rich’s ability to weave California single-fin sensibility with contemporary versatility sits in a genuine sweet spot right now. Surfers are looking for shapes that feel connected and intentional — that’s Wayne Rich in a sentence.
Which designs are falling back?
Highly specialized shapes with narrow wave or skill requirements move more slowly in a general retail environment. The sweet spot — accessible performance with depth for a developing surfer — is where the brand’s energy belongs.
EPS/Epoxy + carbon vs. PU — smoke and mirrors?
Rich’s shaping sensibility is rooted in traditional craft and PU remains central to that experience. The brand’s core customer has strong opinions about feel and flex, and that conversation deserves honesty rather than sales pressure. What Surftech has engineered — its Flash EPS/epoxy solution, proven at World Tour level — offers a genuine alternative for the right rider. Different constructions for different surfers, not one replacing the other.
Organic and eco-blanks — what’s the take?
A shaper defined by craft and intentionality is a natural fit for this conversation. Authenticity matters more in Wayne Rich’s positioning than almost any other brand in the portfolio, and a genuine commitment to sustainable materials — when quality supports it — strengthens rather than dilutes that positioning. Worth noting: feedback on the flax boards has been excellent.
Tips for retailers sorting order sheets?
Wayne’s Surftech collection is curated to near-perfection — one of each hits every type of surfer without redundancy. There’s no waste in this line. Trust the curation, stock the range, and let the craftsmanship do the talking.
Key Products:
Wildcard:
The Wildcard 3 — now made even better with Surftech’s molded Tuflite construction. This advanced build makes the board impressively light and exceptionally durable, giving you more time in the water and less worry about wear and tear. An evolution of Wayne Rich’s classic design, the Wildcard 3 is a proven noserider and smooth turner, blending traditional style with modern performance. It retains the wide nose and crescent tail that helped Wayne claim three straight Malibu Surfing Association/ Club Classic titles. The unique crescent tail — originally hand-sketched by Joel Tudor in Tony Channin’s parking lot for a experimental custom shape — channels water flow for better tail sink and added lift in the nose, helping you stay perched up front. A refined nose concave further enhances control during noserides. Designed with three functional planes — one for noseriding up front, one for effortless trim through the middle, and one for responsive turning near the tail — this board adapts seamlessly to your style. The rolled bottom contour, which flattens out toward the back third, adds stability and boosts maneuverability. Built to perform and built to last, the Wildcard 3 with Tuflite tech is the ideal longboard for anyone looking to surf longer, harder, and better. Classic from tip to tail, it offers a timeless ride with modern-day resilience.

Checkmate:
Game over; this board wins! The Checkmate is a take-no-prisoners, no holds barred, capture-your-king kind of longboard, so get ready to surf at the top of your abilities.
Designed by Wayne Rich in the 80’s as a contest board for Dewey Weber’s contest at the pier and refined for Donald Takayama’s following contest in Oside – basically built for the visionary resurgence of longboard competition, the Checkmate is quick off the bottom, nimble rail to rail, and powerful off the tail, the Checkmate is every bit a performance longboard. Fast wrapping turning in the pocket and hard down-the-line bottom turns are standard maneuvers for this modern gal. At the same time, a soulful outline meets a timeless bottom contour that rolls into a classic 60/40 longboard rail, resulting in a board that noserides, trims, and glides as lovely as any traditional log on the market. The Checkmates traditional features remind us to “Never forget.” While we can’t divulge all the Checkmate’s secrets, we can share that a hard edge is snuck into the board’s tail to deliver a controlled drive when cranking tight turns and a lite concave in the nose blends through the front third of the board allowing for lift and acceleration when hangin’ the piggies. We suggest the Checkmate for all surfers looking to expand their repertoire of maneuvers on a longboard. Designed for the beach breaks of Southern California and adapted for Santa Barbara points, the Checkmate works best in long, drawn-out walls head high and below but can be ridden up to a few feet overhead and at your local reef or beach break. If you are an old-at-heart-dog looking to learn a few new tricks, the Checkmate is for you.
