Retail Buyers Guide: Surfboards 2025 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand: Timmy Patterson
Interviewee: Nigel Gibb. Head of Sales
The good news in the surfboard market is that sales are quite evenly spread between very different designs (perf shortboards, summer boards, midlengths, longboards, beginner funboards), unlike other activities which rely on a single design. Did you adapt your range to offer a mixed bag of boards or do you rather specialize in one segment?
Timmy Patterson, known for crafting world-champion-quality shortboards, has added a midlength, a fish, and an homage to an ’80s model to the Surftech collection—each expertly refined for the future using the inspiration of his team riders. These boards blend classic designs with modern performance, offering surfers versatile, high-quality options that honor the past while pushing the limits of what’s possible today
In the past, beginners had go through the walk of shame, forced to aim for “fugly” looking shapes. In 2025, a novice board can be sexy as well: what do you have in stock for the newbies?
Timmy is known for high-performance boards, but by adding the Blue Fin midlength model and his fish, he broadens the audience. These additions offer versatile options that appeal to a wider range of surfers, combining Timmy’s signature performance with more accessible, user-friendly designs
Mid-lengths are everywhere as well. Which are the latest developments in this design within your range?
Surftech’s Timmy Patterson draws design inspiration from his roots in performance boards to develop the Blue Fin model as a modification for the masses. This midlength blends classic elements with modern innovation, offering a versatile board that makes high-performance surfing more accessible to a wider range of surfers.
The longboard reach is unprecedented in surfing history, as even die-hard shortboard brands do propose classic Logs. If you are new to the category, how did you position yourself? If you have been a long-time promoter of 9’+ boards, do you think “the more the merrier?
Longboards, for the moment, are not part of Timmy Patterson’s strategy with Surftech. His focus remains on high-performance shortboards, midlengths, and fish models that cater to a wide range of surfers seeking innovation and versatility.
While the alternative constructions/materials towards the eco-friendly surfboard have never been so plentiful, we are far from a massive adoption (whether from manufacturers or end-users). Any solutions out there that seem viable to you?
