Borealis Snowboards F/W 2026/27 Preview

Retail Buyers Guide:  Snowboards F/W 2026/27 Retail Buyer’s Guide
Brand:  Borealis
Interviewee: Ben Hall, owner and manager

How would you describe the 2024/25 snowboard season in terms of market performance and consumer demand?
Overall, the 2024/25 season demonstrates a phase of market consolidation in Europe, with consumer demand remaining stable, yet highly selective. While the core market is holding firm, we are observing a noticeable softening in the splitboard segment. The intense post-pandemic surge in backcountry equipment has subsided, bringing sales back to pre-boom levels. For Borealis, this stability is a key opportunity. The consumer’s focus is shifting away from trend-driven novelty and back toward verifiable quality, durability, and a genuine commitment to sustainability. Our brand is uniquely positioned to capture this demand for premium, performance-oriented gear in a market that prioritizes tangible value.

What major trends are shaping the snowboard market (pricing, consumer preferences, rider demographics, retail shifts)?
The current snowboard market is defined by a clear dichotomy in marketing strategies and consumer preferences, with major brands investing heavily in storytelling and athlete endorsements, often prioritizing narrative and lifestyle over the boards’ intrinsic technical qualities. Regarding pricing and preferences, the mass market still seeks cheaper options, while a strong counter-segment of advanced, discerning riders drives demand for more expensive, specialised models focused on verifiable technical quality and durability. While demographics remain predominantly male, efforts towards greater inclusivity are visible across the industry. This market dynamic creates an opportunity for brands like Borealis to position themselves against the current by capitalizing on the gap between superficial marketing and the genuine consumer pursuit of authentic performance and product-first value.

From changing consumer behavior to tariffs and supply chain stress, what’s been the biggest challenge for your brand recently?
The most significant recent challenge has been navigating the volatility and complexity of international trade regulations, particularly concerning shipping to the US market. Specifically, we face persistent friction with US Customs regarding the aggressive application of Section 232 tariffs. These duties, which are intended for raw steel and aluminium, are being incorrectly levied against our finished snowboards, despite the fact that our products contain only a minimal percentage (around 10%) of metal components (primarily edges and inserts). This inconsistent and incorrect tariff application introduces major unpredictable supply chain stress and directly impacts our ability to maintain a competitive price point for US customers. However, we have implemented a proactive measure to counter this. For every shipment, we now include a detailed declaration of materials and a comprehensive appendix citing the relevant laws and trade stipulations that explicitly prove Section 232 is not applicable to our finished goods. This administrative solution is successfully mitigating the incorrect tariff applications, ensuring smoother customs clearance and helping us maintain our competitive pricing strategy.

BRAND FOCUS

What is your brand’s core mission or philosophy, and how does it influence snowboard design and development?
Borealis Snowboards aims to create the most efficiently-shaped snowboards on the market. Our core mission is to utilise the highest possible amount of renewable or responsible materials while maintaining an extremely competitive price point. Crucially, we deliver an exceptional level of quality and finish that aims to surpass everything currently available on the market.

How has your brand’s role in the snowboard market evolved in recent years?
Since 2013, Borealis has significantly advanced its role in the snowboard market, transitioning from a regional premium brand to a key international reference for sustainable, high-quality freeride equipment. This evolution is defined by the brand’s commitment to leading the charge in eco-conscious performance, demonstrated through successful Global Expansion into key markets, Innovation Leadership in design and the integration of renewable materials, and the Targeted Influence of solidifying its position as the preferred brand for discerning riders who demand top-tier performance while upholding strong environmental values.

Who is your target rider for the 26/27 season, and how has this profile changed compared to the past?
Our target rider for the 26/27 season is the conscious, discerning enthusiast. The rider who prioritizes performance, durability, and environmental responsibility over fleeting trends or celebrity sponsorship. This focus aligns with our philosophy: our riders are not the most famous out there, as we tend to focus more on the quality of the gear over endorsement. Our best endorser is the snowboard itself. Compared to the past, the core difference is that this segment of riders is growing fast. Our focus hasn’t changed, but the market’s demand for our core values—superior quality and proven sustainability—has significantly increased.

Which product ranges or categories do you expect to drive the most growth in 26/27?
We have made a concerted effort to elevate and promote the majority of models across our lineup. In every case, however, the exceptional manufacturing quality speaks for itself, acting as the single most powerful selling point. This superior quality and finish are consistently driving sales growth, allowing our boards to perform better and better across all markets, year after year.

SNOWBOARD SPECIFIC

What trends or developments in construction, shapes, and innovation are guiding your 26/27 snowboard range?
The Borealis 26/27 range strategy is centered on refining existing excellence through continuous construction enhancements and annual graphic updates to reinforce the brand’s commitment to high quality and aesthetics. While maintaining faith in our core, proven shapes, the line is strategically expanding with two new additions: the specialised Pilot Fish for powder and carving, and the Reactor, a qualitative, accessible twin available in both men’s and women’s versions. This approach ensures Borealis meets both high-performance niche demands and the need for quality entry-level gear, aligning with market trends that prioritise sustainable performance, durability, and visual distinction over fleeting novelty.

What new materials or material innovations are you using — inserts, edges, cores, sidewalls, resin, glues, base material, top sheet, wax, or others?
Borealis remains committed to its core, proven technologies, which blend performance with sustainability through features like seamless Liquid Sidewalls for superior dampening, Edge Synergy for unmatched carving, and the use of eco-solutions such as natural bamboo topsheets and Zero-VOC resin. These technologies form the reliable foundation of our lineup. For the 2026/2027 season, we are elevating vibration cancellation further with the introduction of D3O technology, a specialized non-Newtonian material known for its impact absorption. This innovation is strategically integrated into a specific, targeted area on our popular Leviathan board to actively cancel unwanted chatter and provide the ultimate smooth, high-speed ride.

How are you incorporating sustainability and ethical production into your boards (materials, processes, lifecycle, packaging)?
Borealis implements a comprehensive approach to sustainability, integrating high-performance, eco-responsible materials throughout its manufacturing process without sacrificing quality. This commitment is highlighted by the use of Zero-VOC epoxy resin and wood cores sourced from sustainably managed forests. Furthermore, the brand strategically incorporates 100% renewable natural bamboo and substitutes traditional fibres with alternatives like DNA Bioplastic and natural Flax Pads (made from natural linen) for dampening and structural support. The production processes themselves are optimized for low environmental impact, utilising recycled steel edges, waxing with biodegradable, fluorine-free wax, and employing water-based UV printing or sublimation for graphics, thereby eliminating toxic solvents. Crucially, to ensure a closed-loop system, any boards that are broken on the mountain are redirected to the Grenoble-based company NoK, which upcycles the retired snowboards into brand-new longboards.

What design directions are you taking — graphics, patterns, collabs, or signature editions?
For the 2026/2027 season, our premium freeride boards—the Koi, Leviathan, Drakkar, and Marauder—have been unified into a single collection defined by a minimalist retro-futurism, featuring a strong emphasis on natural bamboo aesthetics. This clean design represents our vision of timeless, unrestrained freeride. This aesthetic shift extends to our iconic models: the Tundra moves away from typical landscape graphics toward a more modern, minimalist look while retaining its signature bamboo topsheet. Conversely, the Artefact reinforces its powerful, technical identity with a stunning, predominantly black topsheet featuring a minimalist Japanese pattern that runs down the centre, lending the board significant elegance, discretion, and power. For our accessible models, like the new Reactor, we opted for a more vibrant and flashy aesthetic to suit its versatile, freestyle-friendly nature. This minimalist approach is also carried into the Auriga mini-collection (the twin freestyle Auriga and the directional hybrid Auriga One), which maintains its clean white foundation but is updated with modernized colour accents. Critically, while drawing inspiration from Japanese minimalism, our visual core is fundamentally rooted in Nature, geometric forms, and the concept of balance, utilizing nature as a driver for artistic expression. Ultimately, beautiful, balanced, and high-quality design is the central element of all our visuals.

Are you focusing on particular rider groups (freeride, freestyle, all-mountain, women’s-specific, youth, beginner) for 26/27?
Historically, we offered one or two women’s models which were eventually phased out. We are excited to announce our return to this market segment with the female version of the new Reactor, ensuring a high-quality, accessible option for women riders. Otherwise, the majority of our range is intentionally designed for the ‘Rad Dad’ demographic and similar riders. Our core customer base typically falls between 25 and 60 years old—mature, experienced riders who are specifically seeking out ultra-high-quality, premium equipment.
