OVERALL MARKET

How would you describe the 2024/25 snowboard binding season in terms of market performance and consumer demand?
Convenience bindings are clearly the talk of the season. Consumer behavior is shifting toward ease of use in all aspects of life, and both brands and retailers see strong sales potential in this category and are positioning themselves accordingly. The market is currently split between two main directions: traditional strap bindings and convenience solutions. While convenience systems generate a lot of attention, around 70% of riders still rely on and trust classic strap bindings, which remain the backbone of the market.

What current trends are shaping the snowboard binding market (pricing, consumer preferences, retail shifts, rider demographics)?
We see a clear coexistence of traditional strap bindings and convenience systems. Step On is currently the benchmark in convenience, while strap bindings still dominate overall market share. Our Talent Unisex binding launch was very successful, and demand for Team and Team Pro models continues to grow. This confirms the importance of serving both segments equally. Compared to the early 2000s, today’s rider demographic is older, more mainstream, and more convenience-driven. Back then, snowboarding was more “core,” and automated systems failed to gain acceptance. Today, convenience systems can help attract new riders and keep people snowboarding longer.

From changing consumer behavior to tariffs and supply chain stress, what’s been the biggest challenge for your brand recently?
The biggest challenge has been the constant uncertainty around tariffs. Consumer behavior changes, however, actually support our positioning as an authentic snowboard brand that riders can trust.

BRAND FOCUS

What is your brand’s core mission or philosophy, and how does it influence product development?
Nitro stands for authenticity and independence. We make products by riders for riders, with an inclusive mindset and curiosity for new constructions, visuals, and ideas. Being privately owned allows us to pursue innovation without being driven purely by profitability. Our philosophy is to ensure everyone can find the right product within our range. This applies especially to convenience bindings, where we combine proven systems like Step On with Nitro-specific highback shaping and dampening.

How has Nitro evolved in the snowboard binding market over recent years?
Twenty years ago, Nitro was one brand among many. Today, we are seen as one of the few truly authentic and independent snowboard brands and as a market leader that represents snowboarding’s core values.

Who is your target rider for the 26/27 season?
We don’t define a single target rider. We embrace all of snowboarding, which is more challenging from a brand perspective, but ultimately more rewarding and inclusive.

Which product categories will drive the most growth in 26/27?
Growth will come primarily from mid- to high-end bindings and convenience solutions. We’ve made extensive updates across the line to build on last season’s success and remain competitive. Based on the strong first year of Step On, we are expanding the program with more colors and more variety to serve a wider audience.

BINDINGS – PRODUCT & TECHNOLOGY

What new technical innovations are you introducing for 26/27?
We are launching SPEEDWHEEL 3.0 buckles and ratchet straps, focusing on improved materials, durability, and precision. Even tenths of a millimeter in the interaction between lever and teeth make a noticeable difference in closure quality. We’re also introducing the new 3D Opti Pro ankle strap on the Team Pro binding, using a co-molding process to balance support and comfort for different riding styles.

Are you exploring new materials or construction techniques?
Yes. Dampening is a Nitro hallmark, and we’ve further developed this with our new Hyper Foam, offering improved energy return and impact absorption. It’s now featured on Phantom Plus, Phantom, Team Pro, and Poison bindings. Hyper Foam is also integrated into our Step On bindings, reducing chatter, absorbing impacts, and improving turn initiation.

What’s new in the 26/27 Step On binding program?
We’ve refined the highback design to help the boot cleat engage faster and more intuitively. Combined with Hyper Foam dampening, this results in quicker, smoother entry and exit as well as improved ride feel.

Do you have your own convenience-binding solution or share an existing concept?
We deliberately partnered with Step On instead of creating another proprietary system. In the early 2000s, too many incompatible systems confused the market. A standardized interface with multiple brands encourages healthy competition and faster innovation.

Why do you believe Step On is the right long-term solution?
Universal automatic systems sound appealing but often cause boot damage and warranty issues. A dedicated boot-binding interface allows us to design the best boots, bindings, and connection points together—similar to established standards in skiing and cycling.

BOOTS – STEP ON PROGRAM

What’s new in the 26/27 Step On boot line?
We’ve completed aligning standard and Step On versions by introducing Step On models of four iconic boots: Team, Fate, Sentinel, and Scala. They combine Nitro fit and feel with the industry-leading interface.

What updates are you making to liner technology?
We’re upgrading our Flex Toe with a more flexible yet thermally insulating material, improving comfort and accommodating natural left-right foot length differences.

What lacing systems will you emphasize and why?
We continue to offer diverse lacing options. Most Step On boots feature our TLS system, paired with BOA® ankle straps or the new Heel Lock Pro system. BOA® lacing is also used on Sentinel and Scala Step On models.

What are the dominant design directions for 26/27?
Our bindings range from clean, attractive colorways to collaborations like Nitro x Motörhead, with strong input from team riders such as Hailey Langland and Eero Ettala. Nitro boots maintain a clean, feature-driven design. For 26/27, Step On boot styling is aligned with our most successful inline models.

What steps are you taking toward sustainability and ethical production?
Our factories operate entirely on solar energy. We calculate CO₂ emissions across our products and continuously optimize every step. For 26/27, we’re introducing new packaging that fits six bindings per master box instead of five, reducing transport-related emissions. For boots, durability is our main sustainability focus, supported by high-quality materials, recycled rubber in select soles, and reduced packaging wherever possible.

Are you focusing on specific customer segments for 26/27?
Rather than focusing on one segment, we’ve updated all bindings to improve appearance and reinforce trust across the entire range. There is a strong focus on expanding Step On–compatible boots, with four new models introduced for 26/27.
