Construction Of Europe’s First Public Wavegarden Cove (Bristol, England) Commences As Partnership Is Finalised
Over six years after the initial news came out about a potential wave pool in Bristol, a partnership has now been finalised between Wavegarden® and The Wave© Bristol, with construction set to begin imminently. Autumn 2019 is the proposed date for completion.
Press Release: Wavegarden®, market leader in wave generating technologies, is excited to announce they have signed a partnership contract with The Wave©to build a visionary inland surfing destination in Bristol, England. Enabling work has officially commenced on site.
The surfpark will use Wavegarden’s new Cove technology to bring surfing to Bristol. The Wavegarden Cove generates up to 1000 quality waves per hour, with heights starting at 50cm and peaking at almost 2m (6.5ft), allowing people of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of surfing. With the potential to host up to 80 users at the same time, the Cove has 6 different surfing zones that offer waves of different size and power specifically designed to provide ideal conditions for everyone, from professionals to newcomers picking up a surfboard for the very first time.
The Wave’s Founder, Nick Hounsfield, has invested the past 6 years advancing the project to this stage and is genuinely excited about the future, “It has been a long journey however we have now secured the land, planning permits, finance, as well as an expert team to make our vision a reality. It is all systems go and we are now on site preparing for construction! We looked at a number of different wave-making suppliers to provide us with what we needed: a high frequency of ocean-like waves and a commercially viable business plan. Our research concluded with the Wavegarden Cove that clearly meets these requirements and so much more.”

Young English pro surfers Harry De Roth, Luke Dillon and Lucy Campbell recently surfed Wavegarden’s Cove demo model at their R&D center in northern Spain. Following the session De Roth from St Ives, expressed his excitement about a full-scale version coming to Bristol. “It’s exactly what we need, consistent waves like everywhere else in Europe. It’s going to help our whole country a lot.”
The development of The Wave Bristol project represents a special milestone for Wavegarden, as it will be the first full-size public Cove facility in Europe and the second in the world after Melbourne, Australia. If all goes according to plan, Hounsfield and his team aim to test the first waves mid 2019, and open the complex to the public in Autumn 2019.
