Interviewee: Mike Niemann – Director of Product
What are the main trends you see popping in your SS19 Surf Apparel line?
Our print stories continue to drive the bulk of our product offering. We are really pushing technical and functional fabrication across the categories. Our UV surf shirts are gaining steam. We offer these in solid, heathered, and yarn-dye stripe fabrication. These feel and look like a premium tee, but are SPF 40+ with UVA/UVB protection.
What are the key inspirations behind your collection this year?
The team took a trip to Hawaii for our SP19 photo shoot. These amazing islands have way more to offer than just some of the worlds best waves, it challenges those above and below its deep blue surface. The boys surfed, fished, and enjoyed the best the islands have to offer. We used a lot of inspiration from the Islands that you can see throughout the line. We have our Aloha Jig Collection that uses our Hibiscus print, but with our Salty Crew spin. You can see the collection from boardshorts, tees, hats, and into our new SPF 40+ tech wovens.
What are your colour palettes for men’s SS19 season?
We used aqua, light blue, pale yellow, and continued with our staple colours. As well as, bright prints and contrast colour blocking with our boardshorts and utility boardshorts.
In terms of fabrics and materials, which new stuff are you working on for next season?
UV/SPF Sun protection is going to be a big push for us not only in SP19, but in the coming seasons. Our team, ambassadors and customers are in the elements for hours during the day and need the best protection. We continue to have and will continue to use UVA/UVB, anti-microbial, rapid dry fabric, DWR coating, and multi-stretch fabrics throughout the entire product offering. We also to continue to use our performance stretch and recycled polyester fabric. Not only are you going to look good in the gear, but you are going to be protected as well.
